FAQs

How can we help?

Please use our comprehensive FAQ section to answer any questions that you may have regarding CPSL and renewable energy. If you can not find the answer to your question here please contact us by email or telephone and we will be more than happy to help.

What is ground-source heat and how can it be used?

Ground source heat pumps are a very good way of obtaining heat from the ground and transferring to a building, thus providing heat without the need for fuel.

What are smart grids?

They operate often independantly of the national grid, bringing in a grid connection only when the local network cannot meet the site demands.

What is a bi-directional inverter and what does it do in a renewable energy package?

They convert ac power from renewables to dc for battery storage and vise versa.

What sort of expenditures are needed to invest in hydrogen storage and use?

It depends on the intended use for the gas as to the capex of the equipment required

What equipment is necessary to create and store hydrogen?

Compression equipment to provide the correct tanks, regulators, electrolyser, delivery equipment.

How can the hydrogen be used?

The uses are many and varied, Smartpower use the gas for vehicle fuel (transport) and building heating.

How is the stored hydrogen created?

Smartpower used surplus renewable energy to extract hydrogen from rainwater.

Is storing hydrogen dangerous?

No, hydrogen is one of the safest gases due to the nature of its weight compared to air. Any escaping gas disappears upwards very quickly.

How quickly do batteries discharge stored electricity?

They can generally deliver approx 1/5th of the storage capacity over 1 hour.

Do storage batteries discharge some of the electricity they store through discharge?

If the batteries are stored in an idle state for any length of time, particularly in cold conditions, they will eventually begin to lose their charge capacity.

How do I calculate how many batteries I will need to store the electricity I generate?

Calculate the electricity exported to the grid and the amount of site requirement when renewable energy sources are not sufficient to meet the demands. This will provide a very approximate estimate.

What is the size of batteries used for storage?

There is no restriction to the amount of storage that can be made available.

What is the life of batteries used for storage?

Up to 10,000 complete cycles, this extended cycling is achieved using the latest sodium battery technology.

What is required to make a grid connection solution?

Either a sub 4kW system per phase or the unique patented, CPSL connection system.

What type of electricity (single phase or three phase) can be connected to the national grid?

Both types of connection can be accommodated.

Can any amount of renewable electricity generated be connected to the national grid?

Much of the UK is now constrained to a sub 4kW grid connection per phase.

What is grid connection solutions and why is it important?

Much of the UK is now constrained to a sub 4kW grid connection per phase due to the overloading of the high voltage network from renewable production. This constraint is imposed by the network operators and thus restricts connection to very small systems.

What is the equipment required for biomass boilers, what sort of a location and how much space is needed?

Generally, a boiler, thermal store, flue and associated pipework. Most systems can be fitted to existing wet heating systems.

Is it a safe and clean method of creating and storing heat?

Biomass is one of the cleanest and safest methods of creating building heat.

Is it affordable and how do I calculate the payback period?

Add together the savings and revenue and divide into the cost price. Usually around 6 - 7 years.

Can biomass save me money on my heating bills?

It is generally less expensive to burn wood than other forms of energy.

Can I burn wood both as pellets and logs?

Both can be burnt, along with wood chip. Some Biopower systems operate with either.

What do biomass boilers do?

Provide building heat from low carbon sources of energy.

Are wind turbines safe?

Provided they are properly installed and maintained, there are very few accidents resulting from wind turbines.

What sizes of wind turbines are available?

Clean Power Solutions operate in the micro wind sector 3.5kW - 250kW.

How do I calculate payback period?

Add together the savings and revenue and divide into the cost price. Usually around 6 - 7 years.

How do I calculate windspeed?

The windspeed database for the UK can be accessed on line. You just require a post code.

Do wind turbines require connection to the national grid?

Not always, but in most cases a grid connection will be necessary. CPSL take care of the application.

How long does it take to get planning permission?

It depends on the difficulty of the site, from 8 weeks to 18 months.

Is planning permission necessary for wind turbines?

Yes, planning permission is almost always necessary. CPSL have consultants to advise on the process.

Do you require planning permission for solar PV panels?

Not normally, unless the system is ground mounted, in a conservation area or listed building.

Do they have to be on a roof?

No, Clean Power Solutions have installed a number of ground mounted systems.

What size roof is required?

It depends on the system size, but most panels measure 1.640m x 0.992m.

Do spv's require connection to the national grid?

Not always, but in most cases a grid connection will be necessary. CPSL take care of the application.

Is spv still a viable expenditure after the feed in tariff reductions?

Yes, on average a 12% - 15% return on investment can be achieved.
